An Industry Leader?

A Book Review by Nicholas Newman

Writer's Market UK 2009 (Paperback)

By Caroline Taggart (Editor)

Who is it for?

This publication is primarily designed for professional authors, but has some very useful advice and contacts listed for those just entering into the world of writing for a pecuniary reward.

Certainly, very useful for those planning to be a full-time author, scriptwriter or playwright, but less so for those involved in the world of journalism.

How useful is the information provided?

This book is divided into two main parts. The first is a collection of articles covering the many aspects involved in the publishing industry, from advice on what to write, how to write and how to sell what you write, by industry insiders. The articles are written in a clear businesslike manner. I found especially useful the pieces about contracts and fees by the book’s editor Caroline Taggart. What I most appreciated was the approach taken in this book, treating writing as a serious business and not some purely intellectual exercise.

The second part of the book is a directory of 4,000 contacts from publishers, magazines, newspapers, agents, broadcasters, theatres, festivals, competitions and e-zines.

Has it managed to keep its information up to date?

On the whole the answer is in the affirmative in this second edition of the book.

Is there room for improvement?

There is room for improvement; this book needs to reinforce the point that the days of authors just posting their work to the publisher are long gone. In fact, today, successful authors have to be more proactive throughout the production process, as popular detective writer Lindsey Davis said when I interviewed her recently: ‘you must take intense interest in contracts, getting a publisher, getting paid properly, getting books produced to a high standard, and getting publicity to ensure your books are made available to the public.'

Also, in any next edition, it would be useful if the book's editors published a consumer test of the writing software packages listed in this publication.

Would I give this book as a present to a friend with literary ambitions?

Yes, a must for any aspiring or established professional writer.

Rating 8 out of 10.
