| Latest newsletter from European Council of Foreign RelationsDecember 2007
We have just published a Policy Brief entitled "Poland's second return to Europe?" by Pawel Swieboda, president of the Warsaw-based think-tank, DemosEuropa-Centre for European Strategy. The paper looks at the new Polish government's ambitious plans to reposition Poland as a constructive player within the EU. Please feel free to leave a comment on this page. Our first major report, "A power audit of EU-Russia relations," has received significant international attention. News stories appeared in The Economist, The Guardian, Kommersant, Die Presse, EU Observer and many other publications. An article with the paper's main conclusions, by authors Mark Leonard and Nicu Popescu, appeared in 14 languages in over 30 countries. We are currently promoting the report's findings with senior government officials in EU capitals and in Moscow. In other news, we are pleased to report that the international press also picked up our Policy Brief on the balance of soft power in the world. Written by Ivan Krastev and Mark Leonard, the paper analysed the results of a global survey on the perception of 'great powers' in the world. News stories appeared in the International Herald Tribune, El Pais, France Soir, and Suddeutsche Zeitung. One version of this piece was also published on OpenDemocracy.net. In the past few months, we have sought to generate debate on a number of urgent foreign policy challenges and engaged with governments and policy experts through conferences, advocacy events and policy brainstorms. Our launch events in Berlin, Madrid and Sofia were attended by Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Javier Solana, and attracted about a thousand EU policy cognoscenti. Our webpage has been getting thousands of hits a day, and has become a vibrant marketplace of EU foreign policy ideas. Please make sure you read some of the most recent entries, which include Andrew Wilson's articles on the Putin succession, Jose Ignacio Torreblanca's exposé on the planned Comité des Sages, Francois Godement's piece on EU-China relations, and Daniel Korski's polemic about the EU's Balkans policy. 2008 will be an important year for the European Union, with the fight on to ratify the Lisbon Treaty, to launch an ESDP mission in Kosovo, to work with the US to save the NATO mission in Afghanistan, and to dissuade Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. We at ECFR will follow all this and look forward to having you join the discussion on our website. Please feel free to forward this email to colleagues and friends, and consider joining the ECFR community of Associates by signing our Statement of Principles. Please also visit us on Facebook!
